1. How do I place an order?

Placing an order with Martha M. House is easy and there are several different ways to order.  You can order by Phoning, Mailing, or Faxing Us.  Also some items can be purchased in our Online Store.  Please view our How to Place an Order page for details.

All items are custom made or especially ordered for you and cancellations cannot be accepted after order has been placed in production.

2. What type of payment options do you have available?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards.  We also accept personal checks, certified checks, and money orders.  Please contact us if you have any questions.

3. Where are you located?

We are located three blocks south of I-85 in Montgomery Alabama and we are real easy to find.

From Mobile or Birmingham Alabama:
Take I-65 to Montgomery, then take I-85 to Atlanta.  Take the first exit you come to, exit #1 (Court Street Exit). Go straight through the light (do not turn on Court Street).  Proceed across Court Street; Perry Street; Lawrence Street; McDonough Street; and Hull Street to Decatur Street (6th Light).  Turn right on Decatur Street and we are 3 blocks on the right hand side.

From Dothan Alabama (Florida Route):
Take US231 North to Montgomery and follow the highway signs to I-85.  Take I-85 to Downtown Montgomery (or I-85 South).  Travel on I-85 South then take exit #1 (Union Street Exit).  Go straight through the light and cross Union Street to Decatur Street (2nd light).  Turn left and go under interstate bridge and we are 3 blocks on the right hand side.

From Atlanta Georgia:
Take I-85 South to Montgomery and take exit #1 (Union Street Exit).  Go straight through the light and cross Union Street to Decatur Street (2nd light).  Turn left and go under interstate bridge and we are 3 blocks on the right hand side.

Martha M. House is a real person, the sister of Carlton McLendon, the founder of the Victorian furniture industry in Montgomery, Alabama.  The "M" stands for McLendon, her maiden name.

7. How long have you been in business?

We have been in business since 1954.  Please take a look at our About Us section to learn the history behind our family tradition and the beginnings of Martha M. House Furniture.

8. Do you operate a showroom?

Yes! We do have a showroom which is located in Montgomery Alabama where we have showcased beautiful furniture reproductions for 53 years. We do not showcase all the items we sell.

9. How can I receive a shipping quote?

Our Shipping Department strives to ship the best and cheapest way for you.  In order to provide you with a shipping quote we need to know what item(s) you are interested in and your shipping address.  To get a shipping quote please email or call toll free 1-800-255-4195.

10. Why don't you have a shipping price chart or charge a percentage for shipping?

That's a good question.  Don't be mislead by charts and the percentage charges other companies use. We treat our customers fairly just as we would want to be treated buying furniture.  We are in the furniture business not in the shipping business. We do have a handling charge on all shipments.  So, if you see a price chart or get charged a percentage of the sale by one of our competitors YOU ARE PROBABLY PAYING TOO MUCH!  To learn more about our shipping procedures, please click here.

11. How long does it take for delivery of my furniture?

Please allow ample time for production and delivery.  Production time varies at certain times of the year, such as Christmas and holidays.  We acknowledge all orders a production time. This time varies by factory. Most orders from the "Southern Heirlooms" catalog are acknowledged 8-21 weeks or as soon as possible. Items in our "Old World Masters Collection" catalog are also acknowledged 8-21 weeks or as soon as possible for production. Please inquire about a specific item(s) and we be glad to provide that information to you. Delivery time on dining room and bedroom furniture is given on request.  Smaller items are often in stock and may be shipped much sooner.  Delivery time for items shipped by common carriers are delivered anywhere in the 48 states within 2-10 working days depending on your location. Please inquire about delivery time via White Glove Carriers.

12. What if my shipment gets lost or damaged?

All freight shipments must be inspected for damage upon arrival.  Please pay special attention to the condition of the shipping container (box).  If a box is dented, creased, crushed, torn, or otherwise has obvious damages to the box, then the merchandise may also be damaged.  Please note any damages on the freight bill at the time of delivery as this helps us to file a claim with the carrier.  DO NOT REFUSE THE WHOLE SHIPMENT OR PARTIAL SHIPMENT BECAUSE OF A DAMAGED ITEM.  An example would be a damaged marble top and the table is in good condition.  There is no reason to return a perfectly good table and risk it being damaged on return.  Notify us via telephone or email of any damages.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY CLAIMS FOR DAMAGE BE ENTERTAINED AFTER 72 HOURS OF THE RECEIPT OF THE MERCHANDISE BY THE CUSTOMER.  We must be notified prior to the return of any item damaged or otherwise.  In order to return an item you must obtain a RA# (return authorization number) from our shipping department.  The RA# should be written on the outside of the container.  If an item has to be returned it must be in the original shipping container and properly packed using the original packing materials. DO NOT DESTROY THE BOX OR THE PACKAGING WHILE UNPACKING THE ITEM.  IF NOT PROPERLY PACKED WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE THE RETURN AND/OR REFUND.  All returned items are subject to a restocking fee of 20%.   Defective items, or errors on our behalf, are excluded from a restocking fee.

13. How are your items shipped?

Martha M. House Furniture has several methods of shipping merchandise to our customers:  FedEx Ground, US Postal Service, common carriers (Freight Lines), and specialty carriers (White Glove Service).  What you buy determines how it is shipped.  When we ship large items (sofas, chest, etc.) the cost of shipping is determined by the level of service you desire, weight, distance, item freight class and other factors.  This is why we do not list shipping or freight cost as a percentage, as other mail order companies do.  Usually you pay too much when items are shipped to you in this manner.  All domestic shipments are shipped prepaid freight.  Small items are shipped via FedEx Ground prepaid.  All US Postal shipment prices are obtained from the post office. A small handling charge is added.  We rarely ship by the post office unless certain circumstances require us to.  For example, we may be required to ship by post office to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, APO, FPO, and foreign addresses.  This is the most economical way to ship to these destinations.  Some shipping weights are listed for your convenience.  Since sofas, chairs, and tables carry different rates, this information must be obtained from the freight lines.

14. How many fabrics do I have to choose from and how can I get samples?

We have several different factories represented in our catalogs and a large selection of  fabrics from which to choose.  We need to know what item(s) (item numbers) you are interested in, the catalog that you are viewing and we will be happy to send you fabric samples by specifying your color scheme.

Our business hours are 9:30-5:00 Central Time, Monday through Friday. We are closed on most major holidays.

16. Are there more items available than are shown in your catalog?

Yes! There are many items that we sell that are not printed in our Mail Order catalog (because there is just not enough room).  Please take a look at our Online Store.  Here we have many accessory items listed in our Online Store that are not pictured in our catalog as well.  If there is something that you are looking for please feel free to contact us and we will see if we have it available or can get it for you.

17. What types of woods are used in your furniture?

Most of the pieces of furniture that we sell is made out of solid North American Maple. Some other fine furniture woods used in construction are birch, mahogany, beech wood, oak and cherry.  Please feel free to ask what items are made of when you contact us.

18. Are you retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers, importers, or distributors?

That is a good question.  The question is asked of us from time to time because of our great prices.  We are a retail firm which sells at extreme discounts. We are not associated with, nor do we deal with any other mail order company, local or otherwise. We do not sell or buy furniture to/from other mail order companies.
